Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) can cause an overproduction of red blood cells (RBCs) in some patients. Because of this, it is recommended to periodically remove a unit of whole blood to reduce the number of RBCs. Similar to donating a unit of whole blood, therapeutic blood donation is done for medical reasons and takes approximately 15–20 minutes in our office, for a fee.
Who it's for
Therapeutic blood donation is recommended for patients on Testosterone Replacement Therapy whose lab work shows elevated red blood cell counts. If you're a TRT patient, your provider will let you know whether — and how often — a therapeutic draw is right for you.
What to expect

Relax in a private exam room
Your donation is done in a quiet exam room by a licensed nurse who monitors the procedure while you lay back and relax.

Vitals & a snack
Your vital signs are taken before and after the donation, and a snack is provided to help replenish your glucose stores.

A short recovery
You'll remain another 20–30 minutes so we can make sure you're steady on your feet before you head out.
